WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?
Acupuncture is the ancient Chinese practice of inserting very fine sterile pins into the skin at strategic points to relieve pain and treat diseases. It is part of a complete medical system which originated in China over 3,000 years ago. This medical system is composed of acupuncture, herbal medicine, Chinese massage, exercise and diet
CHINESE ACUPUNCTURE THEORY
The traditional explanation for acupuncture is based on the idea that Qi (pronounced chee) or energy flows around in channels throughout the body. When Qi is blocked or weakened, disease can be the end result. By gently stimulating acupuncture points with hair-thin, sterile, disposable pins, energy pathways are opened, allowing the Qi to flow freely through the body’s organ systems and meridians (pathways not unlike the nervous system.) Through this process, acupuncture taps into the body’s innate ability to heal itself by promoting a state of harmony.
WESTERN MEDICINE & ACUPUNCTURE
Western medical understanding of acupuncture is that the strategic points used by acupuncturists release endorphins - the body’s natural painkillers - along with neurotransmitters and neurohormones in the brain. Research has shown that glucose and other biochemicals within our body become elevated following acupuncture.
WHY USE ACUPUNCTURE & CHINESE MEDICINE?
In addition to being effective for many acute and chronic common illnesses, Chinese Medicine has much to offer those who wish to raise the quality of their health and vitality. Practitioners of Asian medicine operate with prevention in mind, attempting to correct small energetic imbalances before they become health problems. |
